New documents found on Augustów Roundup Pacification Operation

Published February 16, 2016

Historians from the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) found on the official web site of the Russian Ministry of Defense important documents describing the July 1945 roundup, selection and extermination process in the area of Augustow – reported the Bialystok branch of the IPN. The Augustow pacification operation is the biggest unsolved crime committed on the ethnic Poles after World War II.

The investigation in this matter was carried out by the Białystok branch of the IPN, which focuses on communist crimes against humanity. It is assumed that in July 1945, as part of the campaign against the Polish underground independence movement, in a still undetermined location, the Soviet NKVD killed at least 600 people who were first rounded up and detained in the districts of Suwałki, Augustów and Sokółka.

The detentions were conducted by the Soviet Military Counterintelligence units "Smersh" of the III Belorussian Front of the Red Army in cooperation with the Polish security services officers and soldiers of the Polish People’s Army. The circumstances of the crime and the burial place (or places) of the victims are still undetermined. Hence, to establish the exact number of victims and their identities, as well as finding their graves is one of the top priorities of the IPN investigation.

Recently, sensational documents explaining the Augustow operation became available to the IPN. Historians of the Bialystok branch of the IPN who monitored the internet found several thousand pages precisely describing the Augustow pacification operation. The materials come from the Russian archives of the Ministry of Defense. The documents describe this operation in details.

The photocopy, the authenticity of which is confirmed by the IPN, describes that the action began at 6 am on July 12, 1945, and the first part of the operation was concluded on July 19. The roundups were carried out by 45 thousands of Red Army soldiers (11 rifle divisions together with artillery divisions, three armored brigades and the mechanized brigade). From the North the Second Armored Corp started the operation in a south-westerly direction from Zielonka - Wiejsieje - Szadziuny - Lejpuny - Druskienniki. At the same time, 271st brigade of OBMON set up the blockade in the East, on the right bank of the Niemen River, along Druskienniki - Przewałka - Łukawica. From the South, 29th riffle corps was along the line of Niemnowo-South Shore the Augustów Canal-Brzozówka-south-eastern shore of the river Wołkuszanka- Lipsk -the southeast edge of the Biebrz - Dębowo.

Augustow Roundup Operation. The operation was launched simultaneously in all places, in the morning. The documents show that over the next few days, the woods and the entire area was carefully combed several times and many arrests were made. On preliminary examination, the historians believe that there were more detainees and persons arrested than originally estimated based on the already known ciphered text by General Vasiliyev Abakumov. The process of the operation was very carefully planned, precisely described, and professionally organized. The troops moved in three groups: The first group of soldiers combed the area, the second group was responsible for verification of the population in various towns and carried out searches. The third group supported the others, when necessary. Soldiers combed the area by moving one next to the other, 8-10 meters apart or even as close as 6 to 8 meters.

Thanks to the documents, which were discovered in the Russian archives, historians will be able to identify additional victims of this massive pacification operation.

The IPN will submit an official request to the Russian Federation asking them to provide copies of the documents from the archive of the Ministry of Defense. The IPN investigators will also ask for help from Belarus. They would like Belarus to allow exploration in the vicinity of the old lodge Giedź near Kalety. The historians expect to find mass graves of victims in this location. For several years the Russian Federation has consistently claimed that their archives did not contain any documents relating to the so-called Augustow Operation.

Today it can no longer be denied that mass extermination took place in the Augustow are and that it was a crime against humanity – said IPN prosecutor Zbigniew Kulikowski at a press conference, referring to the discovery of important documents related to his investigation of the events from July 1945.
